Provenge

Urological Associates of Western Colorado now treats advanced prostate cancer patients with PROVENGE® (sipuleucel-T), the first in a new therapeutic class known as autologous cellular immunotherapies, which are made from a patient’s own cells.

Provenge is designed to stimulate a patient’s immune system to target prostate cancer cells. Each dose is manufactured specifically for the patient using his own immune cells. The process of making Provenge involves introducing a patient’s immune cells to a protein that functions as a prostate-cancer associated antigen. An antigen is a substance that causes the body to react with an immune response. This process activates the patient’s immune cells against prostate cancer cells to help the immune system better fight the disease.

A complete course of Provenge is three infusions, typically administered approximately two weeks apart. In general, side effects from treatment have been reported as mild or moderate.
